Omàmiwininiwak · Algonquin

The river placed first

Kichi Sìbì was not given as property. It was given as a teacher with a season for every instruction.

A wide river bending around pink-grey granite and tall white pines, morning mist on the water.

On the water the English renamed the Ottawa, the Omàmiwininiwak kept an older name in the mouth: , the great river. It was moving before the villages, before the family names, before anyone cut a path down to drink. In the teaching, water was placed first, because water would remember everything that came after.
